Oscars ripple effect

16473234_10154858077966291_7717459406473942745_nThe beauty of the Oscars and the Academy Awards is the culmination of all the bits and pieces to arrive at this point today. Yes there is the glamour, limos, press, red carpet, the award show, the speeches, the fans, security, the after parties. Yet there is more than meets the eye. There is all those people who helped make all these movies and it begins with the story. The tales shared. The stories written.

The journey of storytelling throughout one’s life. From before we are born the stories of the child on its way. The arrival, the stages of a new person. Each of us have stories yet only so many are really told. First those stories need to be written and our society still has so many people who fell in between the cracks in their education who cannot read or write so how do they communicate let alone survive. I know of a close friend who had a young mover who couldn’t write the labels on boxes being moved nor read the words on it. He is 33.

Then there is the time to write. In our explosive age of multiple devices to write on the messages are often just under 50 words. Time is flying. Yet the power of movies. We can watch movies on all these devices so we do love storytellers yet do we support the art of writing in our self and in our families and friends?

I was recently questioned by a sibling do I get paid for writing?  I get paid for certain projects and publications yet not always. I don’t write for the money though I would like it yet I write as I must. I feel the calling. I feel the importance of the power of words used correctly. I dislike when some adults have limited foul mouths spewing degrorative remarks. There is a dictionary of incredible descriptive words to embellish life.

A writer is part of the creative arts like a musician, singer, actor or speaker. To be in the game one must play and practice like an athlete does.

So when we watch the Oscars and go to the movies or watch them on our devices, we are watching the completed project from a thought in a mind to the printed page. Support writers and journalism. Support the arts. Without the voices of people speaking and sharing we leave too much space for those who bark and shout to silence the masses.  The Oscars give us hope that one’s person idea with a lot of help becomes a reality for others to identify with. It is our visual history. It is empowering.

Guitar master Ottmar Liebert comes to The Canyon Club Sunday February 12th.

By Valerie Milano

Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 2/12/17 – With 5 Grammys, and multi-platinum icing spread over nearly 40 albums, Ottmar Liebert has survived and thrived as a solo instrumental artist, one of the toughest gigs in music.  Liebert’s guitar based music is an ambitious mix of styles with a decidedly Flamenco sensibility. Steve Jones signs “Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol” at Barnes & Noble Books- The Grove Thursday, February 16 at 7 PM – 9 PM

The Lord of La Cienega aka King Steve Of BlaBlaBla doesn’t mince his words nor his music selections at 12 bells weekdays on KLOS 95.5 FM. His book Lonely Boy is a deep alley journey into the back streets of the mind of a solitude Sex Pistol guitar slinger in men’s suits, platform boots and a bit of rouge. This rogue is a cheeky Chelsea fan and main man in the punk rock n roll history of the music business. Definitely never mind the bollocks!

Steve Jones signs “Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol” at Barnes & Noble Books- The Grove Thursday, February 16 at 7 PM – 9 PM

Recognized as one of the key inventors of punk and celebrated as a living legend, guitarist and songwriter Steve Jones revisits his unruly, and often tragic, past in his autobiography, Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol.

Its release will coincide with the 40th anniversary of the band’s platinum debut album, Never Mind the Bollocks, which set the world on fire in 1977.In Lonely Boy, Jones recounts the nihilistic songs, amphetamine-fueled music, and influential anarchical fashion that turned a street urchin into a founding member of a genre-defining band.

From his days of petty crime and havoc-wreaking in England, to his first impression of Sid Vicious and famously blowing off the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony with Johnny Rotten, Lonely Boy offers a portrait of a punk pioneer—a demigod to a generation of frustrated youth who identified with the band’s political and social condemnations of life for the working class.

In January 2016 Steve Jones returned to the daytime airwaves of Southern California FM radio at ’12 bells’ from noon to 2pm. The first month was bittersweet with the deaths of music legends Lemmy, Bowie and Prince. The two hours show was not initially a daily weekday show but the demand for more Jonesy quickly evolved.

What is the charm of this ageless lovable grumpy at times punk ?? Could it be his on air random belches on the mic? His banter with a variety of guests from book authors to music legends?  Yes, yes, yes!  He is the extraordinary one of a kind rock n roll everyman. He grumbles about the traffic and rushing to the radio station. He forgets things on air yet he picks up quick on the cues of his producer Mr Shovel, his on air wingman and radio host of the local indie hour Sound Check at 8pm on Sunday.

Steve complains about his weight yet works on improving it. He got his teeth fixed. His fans tune in from across the southland from a variety of fans like Don in Costa Mesa who listens from his longtime college job, a caregiver in Rosemead making lunch for an aging half deaf Irish granny, Jeff in a metal company in Huntington Beach, as well as countless car radios of drivers, construction workers and school teachers on lunchbreaks.
An ample supply of glam 80s rock, early heavy metal, British rock and punk is played plus random gems by Thin Lizzy, Iggy Pop, The Tubes and new indie tunes by newcomers like The Regrettes.

In his deep sexy gruff but playful voice Steve recites his playlist to the listeners. It is like a two hour visit to your favourite record store where you overhear the counter talk of the clerks and customers while the staff picks are played. Before the listener knows it the two hours recess is done and the station change of djs. Weeknights at KLOS is a rebroadcast of the daily show. When Steve is on vacation or away for a book signing then Mr. Shovel takes the helm to air a Vintage Past show. During the show there are Caller contests plus listeners can text requests. Steve is a shameless and proud self promoter with his adventurous instagram performances and his other social media connections.

Join Steve Jones for this Special Event!
This is a wristbanded event.

A wristband will be issued to customers who purchase Lonely Boy from Barnes & Noble at The Grove beginning February 16th at 9am• Limit 1 wristband per book
• Books can be personalized
• Photos from the line and front of table. No posed photos

By Peggy Phillips and Valerie Milano

Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 1/19/17

THT: How many years has Minarik Guitars been exhibiting at NAMM?

Marc – Well, I want to say 15 years.

THT – Has it been a positive experience for you and what keeps you coming back each year?

Marc – It’s a rush! You’re constantly rubbing elbows with people in the industry, all the way from new artists who are just getting started and looking for leg up to get some help launching their career, to living legends. People all the way back from the 50’s and on up, who you’ll see just walking around. It’s an amazing experience. There’s nothing quite like it. You’d think after so many years it would get old, but it doesn’t. It’s like a box of chocolates. I’ll tell you if it’s still fresh and flowery for me in 30 years. LMoore Cover FINAL

Tuesday, January, 17, 2017- – After a six year recording hiatus powerful independent gospel recording artist, songwriter, arranger and entrepreneur Lucinda Moore returns to the music industry by making her first official public appearance over the weekend at the annual BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Honors event in Atlanta, GA. Moore’s appearance on the red carpet came with excitement from press as she discussed the anticipation of her long-awaited new radio single “Walking In My Favor.” The song is written by Moore and produced by Cedric Thompson (Heather Headley, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, LeJune Thompson).

Lucinda is primarily known as a traditional gospel singer with a big voice suited for leading large choirs, which includes the vocal prowess of one of her all-time favorite Richard Smallwood songs “Total Praise.” She is now expanding her musical horizon with an all-new contemporary radio single, which is set to impact Gospel radio on January 23rd. “Walking In My Favor” is an upbeat mid-tempo tune that guarantees to have listeners grooving to the prolific sounds and vocals of this Stellar Award winning artist.

A native of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Moore began singing in church in early childhood. By her early teens, she was singing lead in local choirs. Her professional career began a few years later when she netted a position as backing vocalist for one of her influences, the incomporable Tramaine Hawkins; a post she held for five years.

After several more years of performing with multiple gospel vocal groups, large and small, she self-released her first solo recording, an EP titled Unlimited Praise, in 2004. That led to a record deal on Tyscot Records. The label released her self-titled debut Lucinda Moore in 2006. The album landed in the Top 20 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart and spawned the hit single “Pressure Into Praise” which reached #13 on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart and spent 20 weeks in the Top 30. Lucinda also recorded a re-make of the popular Vickie Winans song “Safe In His Arms.”

In 2010 Lucinda released her sophomore project Blessed, Broken & Given (Tyscot Records), where it reached #13 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart. Moore won a Stellar Award in 2011 for Traditional Female Artist of the Year. To date, the singer has continued to perform live across the country as an in-demand artist and is working on more music as she preps for a new album this year and an autobiography titled Turn Your Pressure Into Praise as well as a shoe line she recently launched.

Lucinda has worked with the likes of VaShawn Mitchell, Rick Robinson, and contemporary Christian artist Carmen to name a few and has contributed lead vocals on several Gospel Music Workshop of America Women of Worship Mass Choir projects, Bishop Hezekiah Walker’s Live at Radio City Music Hall: A Family Affair IIproject leading the popular song, “When We Get Over There,” Joe Pace and Colorado Mass Choir’s project Speak Life project, and Eric McDaniel’s Restoration project among many others.

luke-goss-1-0A Conversation with Luke Goss

By Kely Lyons

Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 1/10/17 – LUKE GOSS has two words woven into the intricate and beautifully-colored tattoo that covers the whole of his upper right arm. But we’ll come back to that a bit later. If you don’t know Luke Goss quite as well as you should, please allow me to provide a brief refresher.

Goss has had quite a ride so far, and one gets the feeling that he has barely even scratched the surface of what he’s capable of doing. As part of the UK pop band Bros in the late 80’s, by age 18 he and his twin brother Matt – along with bass player Craig Logan – were chart-topping sensations with legions of screaming fans flocking to their every appearance, body guards surrounding them and personal assistants attending their every need. When the band flamed out after a few short years in a nose-dive of contractual disputes and overwork, Goss became a best-selling author at age 21 with “I Owe You Nothing”, an autobiography that took its name from the band’s biggest hit. For a millisecond, at the tender age of 22, it looked like he was washed up – in his own mind, at least. But after working with his own band for a time, he turned to acting, snagging the lead role of Danny Zuko in a major UK production of “Grease”. His performance gained him accolades (“Luke Goss is a revelation … his comedy timing is uniquely his own … and his stage presence is considerable …”) and his acting career began in earnest. Since then he’s appeared in dozens of notable projects on both sides of the Atlantic, won awards and built a substantial base of genre fans. Goss currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife Shirley.
