LOS ANGELES WOMEN’S THEATRE FESTIVAL PRESENTS February 4, 2018

EMPOWERMENT DAY  AT  THYMELE ARTS  ON MARCH 24

WHAT: The 5th Annual Solo Performer Empowerment Day.

A full day of workshops and panels tailored to empower and enhance the careers of solo performers in particular, and an event full of information to benefit all performers.

WHO: Presented by Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival (LAWTF). 

WHERE: Thymele Arts, 5481 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90029. 

WHEN: Saturday, March 24, 2018, 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.

This event is a day full of career training from industry professionals, designed to give a boost to solo performers, but will also be of value to anyone contemplating theatrical production in Los Angeles or who wish to tour. Attendees will have a choice among seven workshops and panels.

EVENT SCHEDULE AND LINE UP 

FROM THOUGHT TO PEN

9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

(Workshop)

This workshop will cover areas from thought to pen. Elements will address such topics as exploring why you want to create a solo show, developing a compelling voice, targeting one’s market audience, creative visioning, and owning your unique story.

Facilitators: Debra DeLiso (Director/Instructor/Actor) and Terrie Silverman (Actor/Instructor/Writer)   

BUSINESS OF THE BIZ

9:30 A.M. – 11:00 A.M.

(Panel)

This panel focuses on union vs. non-union, how to select a director, how to negotiate fees and contracts for your show, how to select a theatre venue and how to partner with presenters. Participants will also learn how to barter or co-produce a production, and how to market a show for free.

 SUBMITTING A WINNING PACKAGE FOR A SOLO FESTIVAL

11:05 a.m.-12:35 p.m.

(Workshop)

This enlightening workshop will cover the do’s and don’ts for submitting an impressive presentation of an artist’s work for a solo performance festival, from application to photographs and action shots, as well as learning to write a compelling cover letter. Participants will learn how to submit electronically. Participants will learn what goes into an engaging high quality performance that the panelists are looking for when they review work.

BRANDING YOUR SOLO SHOW IN THE MARKETPLACE

11:05 a.m.- 12:35 p.m.

(Workshop)

This informative workshop is designed to cover marketing materials such as websites, postcards, programs, e-mail blasts, blogs, video trailers and more. Facilitators will discuss press and media, press releases, interviews and articles, radio, television and print outlets, social networking, community outreach, and target marketing as well as how to hire the right publicist, and how to utilize one’s free resources will also be explored, followed by a Q&A.

HITTING THE ROAD WITH YOUR SOLO SHOW

This informative workshop has been designed to identify one’s market, address booking, fees, contracts, marketing/PR, technical riders, technical rehearsals, travel, lodging, and working with presenters and technical crews.

Facilitators: Adilah Barnes (Actor/Producer/Instructor/Author/Retreat Proprietor/Talk Show Host); Vanessa Adams-Harris(Actor/Producer/Writer)

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK

1:35p.m. – 3:05 p.m.

This panel discussion will cover the professional team needed to make a solo show shine from the director and producer to lighting and sound technicians, from costumes and dramaturgy to marketing and publicity, not to mention selecting the right theatre venue and its accompanying staff. Participants will also learn how to create a supportive team that will make a dream show a reality!

 EMPOWERED WOMEN: CRAFTING A SOLO CAREER

3:10 p.m. – 4:40 p.m.

This exciting panel of professional artists will share their creative process, vision and artistic autonomy through their individual journeys they have made to become proactive, empowered and working solo performers. The panel will cover topics that include how to make a living doing what you love; the lessons and blessings along the way to one’s solo career; advice from one solo artist to another; and a panel Q&A.

Founded in 1993 by Adilah Barnes and Miriam Reed, the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival holds the distinction of being the oldest Annual Solo Festival in Los Angeles celebrating powerful women performers. LAWTF is a critically-acclaimed international festival which has produced over 500 extraordinary solo artists from around the globe.
