The Internet and other intriguing subjects were discussed at length during CBS’ TCA Press Tour Panel held on Tuesday, August 1st, 2017 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Present were CBS personnel Katie Barker, Vernon Cheek, and Kacy Barrasas; executive producer and showrunner Ted Humphrey; and actors Jake Matthews, Monica Potter, Jeremy Piven, Richard T. Jones, Natalia Tena, and Blake Lee.
In his grief over the murder of his daughter, visionary tech billionaire Jeffrey Tanner (played by Jeremy Piven) creates a whole new way to solve the crime that involves crowdsourcing. The fundamental tenet of crowdsourcing is that the collective can be smarter than the smartest person in it!
There’s a cop show element to WOTC where, for the most part, the cops are heroes to be trusted. Here Richard T. Jones of JUDGING AMY fame portrays Detective Tommy Cavanaugh. “I think we all want the police to be on our side!” said Jones.
“We want to delve into police community relations. We want to delve into racial tension in America. We want to delve into all of the things that are in the headlines today in terms of how police are viewed,” said Humphrey.
Appropriately enough, the original concept for WOTC was a collaborative effort originating in Israel. Could the “wisdom of the crowd” actually be used to help with law enforcement operations?
According to Humphrey, it already is! “So, you know, to me, it feels like it’s a cutting edge idea that has a lot of flaws,” he said. “I think part of the message of the show is to take a really good, hard look at exactly how that’s happening and how we can, in some ways, maybe shape it.”
THE WISDOM OF THE CROWD is slated to premiere on Sunday, October 1st on CBS at 8:30 p.m. If two heads are better than one, how about a million minds solving one murder?!
