OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder To Be Honored At Save The Children Illumination Gala

Sep 19, 2017 01:30 pm

Save the Children, the leading organization investing in childhood, has announced that the 5th Annual Save the Children Illumination Gala will honor Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic; Chobani founder and CEO Hamdi Ulukaya; and the organization’s philanthropic corporate partner BVLGARI North America.

The event, presented by Johnson & Johnson, will be hosted by NBC’s Craig Melvin and will take place on Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at The American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

British singer-songwriter Leona Lewis will perform.

Now in its fifth year, the Illumination Gala will benefit Save the Children’s efforts to give more children a stronger start in life by helping end preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths and by supporting early childhood education. In recognition of the occasion, Save the Children will celebrate each of the honorees for their achievements in giving children a brighter future:
• The Voice Award for Ryan Tedder, Grammy-winning songwriter, producer, and front man of the multi-platinum selling band OneRepublic who is being recognized for his extraordinary dedication to speaking up on behalf of the world’s most vulnerable children. In addition to supporting Save the Children’s humanitarian relief efforts on the conflict in Syria and in the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan, Tedder used the power of his voice on the OneRepublic song “Feel Again.” The song served as the backdrop in 2013 for an Ad Council PSA for Save the Children’s Every Beat Matters campaign, which helped millions of children in poor countries survive their first five years of life. Tedder said the song was inspired by actual heartbeats of children in Guatemala and Malawi, where front-line health workers work every day to keep kids healthy. As part of the campaign, Tedder visited Save the Children’s newborn and child survival programs in Guatemala, and donated proceeds from sales of the song to Save the Children. His foundation, The Ryan & Genevieve Tedder Foundation, also supports children through education and youth development.
• The Humanitarian Award for Hamdi Ulukaya, founder and CEO of the #1 U.S.-based Greek Yogurt brand Chobani, who is being recognized for his courageous leadership on behalf of refugees. Ulukaya has demonstrated an inspiring commitment to provide resettled refugees with a path to a brighter future by embracing them as valued employees at Chobani. In 2015, he signed the Giving Pledge, committing the majority of his personal wealth to helping displaced people and founded the Tent Foundation, which forges innovative partnerships with NGOs, business and governments to improve the lives of refugees all over the world. As an entrepreneur and devoted philanthropist, Ulukaya is changing the conversation around the global refugee crisis – calling on the global community to recognize the human rights of refugees and put an end to displacement once and for all.
• The Visionary Award for BVLGARI North America, is in recognition for its enduring commitment to supporting children in need in the United States and around the world. Since beginning its unique partnership in 2009 with Save the Children, Bulgari has raised over $50 million globally through sales of an iconic Save the Children jewelry collection.More than half a million people have purchased the signature pieces, including a ring, a bracelet and a pendant. Funds raised through the partnership have been invested in 100 projects in 33 countries, reaching more than one million at-risk children and youth through education, emergency response, poverty reduction and youth empowerment programs. In the United States, Bulgari is a generous supporter of Save the Children’s early childhood education programs.

“The individuals we are honoring at our fifth annual Gala have gone above and beyond on behalf of children around the world – from supporting newborns’ health to early childhood education to refugees,” said Carolyn Miles, Save the Children president & CEO. “This year’s honorees’ compassion and dedication toward ensuring every last child, whether here in the US or around the world, can reach their full potential is inspiring. We are delighted to recognize this remarkable group for their contributions and to celebrate their accomplishments.”

Other notable guests expected to attend include Save the Children Artist Ambassador, Trustee and Gala Honorary Chair Jennifer Garner, Second Lady of the United States (2009-2017) and Save the Children Board Chair Dr. Jill Biden, Save the Children President & CEO Carolyn Miles, Save the Children Action Network President Mark Shriver, award-winning journalist Tamron Hall, and fashion designer, philanthropist and Gala Co-Chair Gabriela Hearst, Corbin Capital Partners CEO and Gala Co-Chair Tracy Stuart, among others.

The gala will be presented by Johnson & Johnson. For more information, please visit www.savethechildren.org/gala.

Kate Winslet To Be Honored With Actors Inspiration Award

The SAG-AFTRA Foundation has announced it will bestow its Actors Inspiration Award to critically-acclaimed actress and philanthropist Kate Winslet, highlighting her career achievements and honoring her charitable work.

The nonprofit’s Patron of the Artists Awards celebration will also honor director/producer Judd Apatow, Academy Award winning director Kathryn Bigelow, and Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos for their roles in supporting actors and performing artists in their careers. The event takes place Thursday, November 9, at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.

Academy Award winning actress Kate Winslet has brought to life some of cinema’s most captivating and memorable roles. Her resume consists of critically and commercially acclaimed work including Steve Jobs, Little Children, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Iris, Titanic, and Sense and Sensibility, as well as a span of awards and honors that illustrate her talent and solidify her permanent place in cinema history. A seven-time Oscar nominee, Winslet earned the award for her role as Hanna Schmitz in Stephen Daldry’s 2008 “The Reader.” She also won an Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of the title role in the HBO mini-series “Mildred Pierce.” Up next, Winslet will be seen in Hany Abu-Assad’s The Mountain Between Us opposite Idris Elba and Woody Allen’s Wonder Wheel opposite Justin Timberlake and Juno Temple, both of which will be released this winter.

As one of the most accomplished actors of our time, Winslet has simultaneously used her artistic platform to champion several philanthropic causes. The SAGAFTRA Foundation’s Actors Inspiration Award recognizes Winslet’s dedication and commitment to a broad array of philanthropic activities ranging from global causes like her own Golden Hat Foundation working for children with autism and their families, and more regional charities in the UK such as Cardboard Citizens whose aim is to rehabilitate and provide creative sanctuary for at-risk and homeless individuals, down to very specific fundraising for disadvantaged individuals seeking life-saving cancer treatments.

“We are so proud to honor Kate Winslet with our Actors Inspiration Award. Without a doubt, Kate is an incomparable actress who we admire for her work and contribution to our craft. Yet, what makes Kate this year’s honoree is the work she does behind the scenes making a difference in the lives of children and adults living with autism through her Golden Hat Foundation while simultaneously supporting so many other worthwhile charities,” said SAGAFTRA Foundation President JoBeth Williams. “Kate has been a game changer and role model in our industry, setting a sterling example for all artists and leaders to use their influence to give back to the greater welfare of others. We look forward to presenting her with this award for all she has accomplished, and all she has given back.”

Leonardo DiCaprio was the first recipient of the SAGAFTRA Foundation’s Actors Inspiration Award, and previous Patron of the Artists Awards honorees include Lee Daniels, Megan Ellison, and Rob Marshall. The Patron of the Artists Awards event includes musical performances with ticket sales benefitting the SAGAFTRAFoundation. Sponsors include United Airlines and Variety.

Alec Baldwin Gives Voice To Tiger In Circus

Sep 19, 2017 07:30 am
As the Santa Fe City Council prepares to hold a public hearing tomorrow on a proposed ban on traveling animal acts — just days after a tiger once used by Ringling Bros. circus escaped from a truck and was shot dead in Georgia — actor Alec Baldwin highlights the cruelty of animal circuses in his new PETA campaign.

Video: Alec Baldwin Tells the Heartrending Story of a Tiger in a Circus

In the video, the Emmy winner supplies the voice for an abused tiger who is separated from his mother, whipped, and trained to perform bizarre stunts.

“Whenever I tried to play, I was whipped, jabbed, or hit with a stick,” Baldwin says in the video. “They made me perform scary tricks, like jumping through rings of fire. I knew what would happen if I didn’t obey. And this happened over and over and over, until I knew there was no escape. Until my spirit was crushed.”

Councilor Signe Lindell introduced the bill to ban the use of wild animals such as tigers in circuses and traveling shows in Santa Fe earlier this year, and PETA’s supporters in the city have been vocal in their backing of the measure.

PETA — whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment” — notes that while Ringling Bros. shuttered this spring, other circuses that feature cruel animal acts are still touring in Santa Fe and other parts of the country. For example, the U.S. Department of Agriculture suspended the license of Culpepper & Merriweather Circus (which frequently brings big cats to New Mexico) in 2011 after it demonstrated a “shockingly cavalier attitude” toward the health and safety of animals by failing to hire an attending veterinarian, provide tiger cubs with adequate nutrition, and provide a wounded tiger cub with care and treatment. In addition, while the circus was on tour, a tiger named Delilah gave birth to three cubs who were taken away from her to be raised by a circus worker — two died within weeks of their birth, and a third was later seized by inspectors who found him confined to a dog carrier in the hot cab of a truck.

This isn’t the first time that Baldwin has helped PETA oppose cruelty under the big top. His 2012 video exposé of elephants in the circus helped lead to a similar ban on traveling wild-animal acts in his native New York in June.

PETA supports animal rights, opposes all forms of animal exploitation, and informs the public on those issues. The group does not directly or indirectly participate or intervene in any political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public office or any political party.
