NEW PROGRAMMING ANNOUNCEMENTS

“Miami Vice” Reboot in the Works from Vin Diesel
NBC is teaming with Vin Diesel to develop a potential revival of crime solver “Miami Vice,” which initially aired on the network from 1984 to 1989 with Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in the lead roles. The proposed series is being driven by Shana Waterman (“24: Live Another Day,” “Wayward Pines”), and is the first effort to come out of Diesel’s first-look deal with Universal Television.

Diesel and Waterman will executive produce alongside Chris Morgan and Ainsley Davies via the former’s overall deal with Universal Television. Peter Macmanus (Spike TV’s “The Mist”) will pen the script. No casting has been announced.

If “Miami Vice” does move forward, it won’t be the first revival of the classic series. Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx headlined a big screen version of the classic series in 2006.

Freeform Orders Comedy Pilot “Now & Then”
Freeform has ordered a new single-camera comedy pilot called “Now & Then” about a group of old college friends, who, having lost touch over the years, are brought back together unexpectedly for one wild night only to be given a new lease on life and friendship. Reuniting as friends gives them the opportunity to discover who they always promised each other they would be. The pilot is written by Shawn Wines who will also serve as executive producer, along with executive producers Aaron Kaplan and Dana Honor.

SERIES RENEWALS AND CANCELLATIONS

ABC’s “The Middle” to Conclude Next Season
ABC sitcom “The Middle,” a consistent performer for the past eight seasons often forgotten in the “Modern Family” hoopla, will come to a conclusion following the upcoming ninth season. “We sat down with the cast at the end of last year,” said executive producer Eileen Heisler. “It was important to have a year to say goodbye. We want to be able to tell all the stories.”

Launched in 2009, the single-camera comedy stars Patricia Heaton as Frankie Heck, a working mom who, together with her husband Mike (Neil Flynn), has three children named Axl (Charlie McDermott), Sue (Eden Sher), and Brick (Atticus Shaffer).

In its move to the Tuesday 8 p.m. ET anchor position this season, “The Middle” improved its half-hour by 22 percent in total viewers and was ABC’s most watched comedy in the time period since “Last Man Standing” in the 2011-12 season. The cast will be present at the Summer Press Tour for a session during ABC’s portion on Saturday.
