“The Newlywed Game,” hosted by Bob Eubanks, premiered on ABC in daytime in 1966. A primetime version of the game show began on Jan. 7, 1967. On December 20, 1974, “The Newlywed Game” concluded its run and was the longest running game show in ABC daytime history until 1985, when “Family Feud” surpassed it. To-date, there have five revivals (including the version on GSN hosted by Sherri Shepherd in 2010)…Short-lived “Law & Order: LA” concluded on NBC in 2011 after 22 episodes…Celebrity Birthdays: Guitarist Richie Sambora is 58; actress Lisa Rinna (“Melrose Place”) is 54; comedian John Henson is 50; “Grey’s Anatomy” star Justin Chambers is 47.

-Did You Know:
“The Newlywed Game” was the last TV series to premiere in black and white. Just two months after debuting it converted to color. And Bob Eubanks at 28 was the youngest emcee to host a game show. Eubanks hosted the ABC and the first syndicated series of original version of “The Newlywed Game Show” and then returned for The New Newlywed Game” from September 1985 until December 1988.

Ratings Breakdown:
“American Ninja Warrior” on NBC rose to a season high, with a 3.5 rating/6 share in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m. ET. Comparably, that was 17 percent below competing “The Bachelorette” on ABC (4.2/ 7), but it could still be enough to dominate the two-hour block in the young adult demographics. “American Ninja Warrior” was also on par with the 3.7/ 6 on the year-ago evening (while “The Bachelorette” slipped by 19 percent from the 5.2/ 9).

Also original last night was recent Fox entry “Superhuman,” which dipped to a series low 1.5/ 2 from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, that was 35 percent below the 2.3/ 4 for lead-in “So You Think You Can Dance.”

At 10 p.m., NBC reality/competition “Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge” dropped by 40 percent in households from lead-in “American Ninja Warrior,” with a 2.1/ 4.

NEW PROGRAMMING ANNOUNCEMENTS

Showtime to Air Theatrical “Baby Driver”
Showtime has acquired the television rights to “Baby Driver,” which tells the story of a talented young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) who relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.

“Baby Driver,” which also stars Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Jon Bernthal and Eiza Gonzalez, will debut in 2018 across all Showtime platforms.

NOTES OF INTEREST“Snowfall” on FX Opens with 2.24 Million Viewers
FX is reporting 2.24 million viewers and 1.30 million adults 18-49 for the series premiere of drama “Snowfall” on Wednesday, July 5. Of the 30 cable drama series premieres year-to-date, the premiere telecast of “Snowfall” ranked in the Top 5 in Adults 18-49 (#4), Adults 18-34 (#4) and Adults 25-54 (#5).

“Snowfall” is set against the infancy of the crack cocaine epidemic and its ultimate radical impact on the culture as we know it. The story follows numerous characters on a violent collision course, including: Franklin Saint (Damson Idris), young street entrepreneur on a quest for power; Gustavo “El Oso” Zapata (Sergio Peris-Mencheta), a Mexican wrestler caught up in a power struggle within a crime family; Teddy McDonald (Carter Hudson), a CIA operative running from a dark past who begins an off-book operation to fund the Nicaraguan Contras and Lucia Villanueva (Emily Rios), the self-possessed daughter of a Mexican crime lord.

Marvel Television and Freeform Set Cast for “Marvel’s New Warriors”
Marvel Television, Freeform and ABC Signature Studios today have completed casting for “Marvel’s New Warriors,” the upcoming new comedic live-action adaptation of the Marvel comic featuring young adult heroes. “Marvel’s New Warriors” marks Marvel’s first foray into comedy for a live-action television series slated to debut in 2018 on Freeform.

The cast of the “New Warriors” includes  Milana Vayntrub (“This Is Us,” “Silicon Valley”) as Doreen Green a.k.a Squirrel Girl; Derek Theler (“Baby Daddy”) as Craig Hollis a.k.a Mister Immortal; Jeremy Tardy (“Dear White People”) as Dwayne Taylor a.k.a Night Thrasher; Calum Worthy (“Austin & Ally”) as Robbie Baldwin a.k.a Speedball; Matthew Moy (“Steven Universe”) as Zack Smith a.k.a. Microbe; and Kate Comer (“Hello My Name is Doris,” “The Comeback”) as Deborah Fields a.k.a. Debrii .

The series is co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios. Kevin Biegel (“Cougar Town,” “Enlisted”) will serve as showrunner and executive producer, with Marvel’s Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s The Defenders,” “Marvel’s Punisher”) and Jim Chory (“Marvel’s The Punisher,” “Marvel’s Inhumans”) as executive producers.

Casting News
Bill Skarsgard (“Atomic Blonde,” “Assassination Nation”) has been cast as a series regular on upcoming Hulu drama “Castle Rock,” playing a young man with an unusual legal problem. Described as a psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, “Castle Rock” combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. The cast includes Andre Holland, Sissy Spacek, Melanie Lynskey and Jane Levy.

Aaron Judge Puts on Spectacular Display in MLB Home Run Derby Championship
In a memorable 2017 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby from Miami on July 10 that aired on ESPN and ESPN2, New York Yankees outfielder and instant rookie sensation Aaron Judge wowed the crowd as he slugged many exhilarating home runs en route to winning the All-Star event. Several of his hit balls traveled at least a mammoth 500 feet. Through three rounds of play, Judge defeated formidable competition in Miami Marlins’ Justin Bour, Los Angeles Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger and Minnesota Twins’ Miguel Sanó.

Judge becomes the first rookie to ever win MLB’s Home Run Derby. In 2012, he had also won the College Home Run Derby as a student at Fresno State. For a look, click here

Chris Christie Labels Attacking Caller a ‘Bum’ and a ‘Communist’ on Sports Radio
New Jersey governor and former presidential nominee Chris Christie was the guest co-host in the afternoon shift on New York’s popular sports radio station WFAN on July 10.

Frequent WFAN caller Mike from Montclair — who informed the behind-the-scenes screener he wanted to discuss Yankees rookie slugger Aaron Judge — actually chose to chime in discuss Christie’s recent day at the beach that was closed to the public due to New Jersey’s government shutdown.

Christie sarcastically replied he loves “getting calls from communists in Montclair” and that the caller was a “bum.” He also added that he’ll “stop polluting the airwaves with a [caller] like that.” For a look, click here

Oliver Dizon has joined Fox Networks Group as Executive Vice President of Pricing and Planning for FNG Advertising Sales. Dizon will oversee advertising inventory and revenue management strategy for FNG’s portfolio of networks. Dizon most recently served as Senior Vice President, Sales Revenue Management and Client Services for ESPN, where he oversaw the strategic and tactical planning and pricing of all its television networks and its digital advertising assets.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

The new season of TLC’s “The Little Couple” will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 9 p.m. ET. The logline: At the start of this season, Jen and Bill take the kids on their first international trip to the United Kingdom when Jen is invited to participate in a conference in Scotland. It’s not all work and no play, however, as the family takes the opportunity to visit a scotch distillery, a castle where Will and Zoey feel quite at home and plenty more adventures as they make their way to London, such as questioning a royal guard and partaking in proper British tea. Throughout the season, the family will continue to expand their horizons stateside, including a visit to Washington D.C. to host an adoption gala, which coincides with Zoey’s fifth birthday celebration!

HBO has announced that the long-awaited return of sitcom “Curb Your Enthusiasm” will be on Sunday, Oct. 1. Joining Larry David will be series regulars Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman and JB Smoove.
