OPINION

“Peak TV” Has Peaked, Sprung a Leak and Burst its Ratings Bubble
From Campaign US: It had to happen eventually. “Peak TV,” the era after the “Golden Age of Television” aptly named for its overwhelming amount of choices, has summited.

This year alone, more than 500 original scripted series (excluding children’s programming) are expected to air. Of course, 400 original series—or 300—would still be overkill.

Once upon a time, a TV season consisted of approximately 100 to 150 scripted series on the broadcast networks. But with every outlet jumping on the programming bandwagon in recent years—particularly the digital streamers with their seemingly endless financial pockets—there was simply too much original scripted content. And it was just a matter of time before the bubble burst. For more, click here

SERIES RENEWALS AND CANCELLATIONS

Netflix Renews “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” for Season Four
Netflix has greenlit sitcom “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” for a fourth season, with an expected 13 new episodes. Debuting on March 6, 2015, the series from Tina Fey and Robert Carlock follows Kimmy Schmidt (Kemper) as she adjusts to life in New York City after her rescue from a doomsday cult in Indiana where she and three other women were held by Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm) for 15 years. Determined to be seen as something other than a victim and armed only with a positive attitude, Kimmy decides to restart her life by moving to New York City, where she quickly befriends her street-wise landlady Lillian Kaushtupper (Carol Kane), finds a roommate in struggling actor Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess), and gains a job as a nanny for the melancholy and out-of-touch socialite Jacqueline Voorhees (Jane Krakowski).

The Universal Television comedy was originally slated to air on NBC, but Netflix competed with an initial two season pick-up. Thirty nine episodes, to-date, have been produced.

NOTES OF INTEREST
Combining TV with Digital Provides Best of All Worlds for Brands
From PromaxBDA: “It has never been easy to measure audiences, and it has gotten much trickier as the audience has become more fragmented and has drifted off into multi-tasking,”  said Advertising Research Foundation (ARF) President Scott McDonald to open the ARF Audience 2017 Measurement conference in New Jersey on Monday.

For advertisers in an era of digital television distribution, it’s more challenging than ever to determine the right combination of platforms to best deliver their message. How exactly are audience segments going to be defined and then measured in comparable ways?

While there is no simple answer at the moment, one current myth that is about to be busted, according to CBS and Nielsen, is the common consensus that the digital platform currently offers the best experience for an advertiser. For more, click here

ABC Finds NBA Ratings Absolutely Golden
A post-season playoff packed with lackluster, lopsided games finally got the rematch that apparently everybody wanted. And maybe needed.

The result? Ratings gold for ABC and its parent, Walt Disney Co., which has posted numbers not seen since Michael Jordan won his sixth and final NBA Finals ring way back in 1998.

The Golden State Warriors beat the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers in Oakland on Monday night to claim their second championship in three years. As ruthlessly dominant as the Warriors appeared to be, the series was a tonic for ABC. For more at Benzinga.com, click here

“The Assassination of Gianni Versace” Moved to Second Entry in FX’s “American Crime Story” Franchise
“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” which began production in April, will now be the second installment of FX’s “American Crime Story” limited series franchise. “Katrina: American Crime Story,” which was originally supposed to followed “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” will now be third. “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” which stars Darren Criss, Edgar Ramirez, Penelope Cruz and Ricky Martin, is expected to debut in early 2018.
