On Sunday, April 30th, actor/singer Nick Jonas received The Radio Disney Music Awards’ “Hero Award” for his philanthropic efforts with the Type 1 Diabetes community through his non-profit, Beyond Type 1.
Nick Jonas was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 13 and co-founded of Beyond Type 1 in 2015. Beyond Type 1 is a new brand of philanthropy leveraging the power of social media and technology, changing what it means to live with a chronic disease. Beyond Type 1 focuses on education, advocacy, and the path to a cure for Type 1 diabetes through utilizing their broad ranging portfolio of grants and programs aimed at improving the lives of people impacted by Type 1 diabetes.
Prior to the ceremony, Jonas walked the red carpet with ten children with Type 1 diabetes who are also Beyond Type 1 ambassadors. The Beyond Type 1 ambassadors also joined him on stage to accept his Hero Award. One familiar face on the red carpet was Ella DeNiro, who has Type 1 and is Robert DeNiro’s granddaughter.
