Pamela Anderson Delivers Petition Calling For Mauritius To Stop Dog Cruelty

This week, actor and animal advocate Pamela Anderson – accompanied by rescued dog Zorro – hand-delivered a 179,000-name petition to the High Commission of Mauritius in London that urges the country to implement a spay-and-neuter programme to tackle its stray-dog problem.

The petition follows video footage released in November by International Animal Rescue and PETA which reveals that workers from the government-funded Mauritius Society for Animal Welfare (MSAW) hunt down, catch, and cruelly kill a large number of dogs with painful hit-or-miss lethal injections. The shocking eyewitness account shows that as many as 20 dogs are killed in full view of one another and that they try desperately to escape by climbing the kennel gates and walls.

“How can people enjoy a vacation on your ‘Paradise Island’ while knowing that such horrors are taking place near their hotels?” pleads Anderson. “Dogs are very loving and sensitive beings. We owe it to them to find a compassionate solution to the overpopulation crisis in Mauritius.”

The long-time PETA supporter joins Tom Hardy, Krysten Ritter, Mickey Rourke, and Sia in teaming up with PETA or its international affiliates to raise awareness of dogs in need.

 

Pippa Middleton Surprises Heart Support Group With Afternoon Tea

Members of a British Heart Foundation Heart Support Group were surprised by a special guest when Pippa Middleton, one of their Ambassadors, joined them to share a heartfelt afternoon tea this week at Grace Belgravia London’s leading health, wellbeing and lifestyle club.

Members of the London Heart Support Groups met with Pippa Middleton to sample dishes from her latest collaboration with the BHF – Heartfelt, a recipe book featuring over 100 delicious recipes for a heart healthy lifestyle. All proceeds from the book will help BHF fund life saving research to fight heart disease.

Eileen Hunt, a member of the Lewisham Heart Support Group, says: “I had such a wonderful afternoon. I’d heard about the new cook book but hadn’t had a chance to take a look at it yet. Having Pippa there and getting to sample some of the tasty dishes was such a wonderful surprise and a lovely treat.

“After having open heart surgery 3 years ago, I always try to eat a healthy diet. Heartfelt has given me lots of ideas about how I can be more adventurous with food, whilst still keeping it healthy.”

Pippa adds: “It was such a pleasure to meet members from British Heart Foundation Heart Support Groups and hear about each of their challenging journeys. The determination and energy in the room was inspiring.

“As an Ambassador, I care deeply about the work of the British Heart Foundation. It was wonderful to see first-hand the difference Heart Support Groups make to people’s lives and it was a pleasure to share some of the dishes from Heartfelt with the group.

“Through Heartfelt I want to demonstrate how easy it is to create simple dishes that help with nutritious eating and focus on nourishing meals which are good for the heart. I hope readers will benefit not only from a growing awareness of the importance of heart health, but also from the idea that healthy food is not just good for you, it can also be fun to prepare and delicious to eat.”

These groups are open to anyone with any kind of heart condition as well as their partners and families.

Members of the groups shared their experiences with Pippa over some delicious heart-healthy treats from Heartfelt including salmon topped spelt and beetroot blinis; beetroot falafels with yoghurt dressing; oaty drop scones with cranberries and banana and blueberry and oat muffins.

Heartfelt is full of easy to create recipes for anyone wanting to eat well to help protect their heart health. Pippa worked with a team of experts in the production of Heartfelt and is passionate about delicious food and a healthy, active approach to life. Her production team included Waitrose Weekend Food Editors, who supported on recipe development, and our Registered Dietitians who ensured the recipes are not only delicious and simple to produce but also a good fit for a heart healthy diet.

The Late Alan Rickman Is Still Raising Funds For Charity

Although actor Alan Rickman passed away 11 months ago, the OneClickGiving fundraising video for which he did the voiceover, which appeared on YouTube a year ago this week, is still generating revenue for charity.

Called This Tortoise Could Save a Life, the video shows a tortoise eating a strawberry, while click-by-click, each view earns advertising revenue from YouTube, which OneClickGiving passes on to Save the Children and Refugee Council to help refugees.

The humorous 30-second video shows the slow moving reptile chomping at the fruit, while Rickman narrates and the music of Strauss’ Wiener Walzer plays.

“We’re trying to make a viral video to help refugees as this tortoise munches away,” says Rickman tediously, and then goes on to explain how.

OneClickGiving was founded by a group of students from Oxford University in 2015. With no operating costs and no profit, all the money generated by the video goes to the two charities.

“OneClickGiving is a new way of giving to charity,” says the student-run charity initiative. “All you need to do is watch and share.”

Slow and steady wins the race.

 

George Lopez Teams Up With PETA To Say Adiós To Homeless-Animal Crisis

The new campaign reminds families that failing to spay or neuter animal companions is loco, since “fixing” them is the only way to reduce the number of dogs and cats in animal shelters and on the streets.

In an exclusive video Q&A with PETA, the Lopez star shares another key way to help homeless dogs and cats: adopting from animal shelters. “I found Owen in a shelter — who knows what would have happened to him if I hadn’t come along,” he says. “If you see the look on a face of a dog who’s in a shelter, and then look at them when they get rescued, just for that sheer joy of that look on their face that you’re responsible for, it’s a beautiful thing to see.”

PETA — whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way” — notes that more than 6 million unwanted cats and dogs enter animal shelters every year in the U.S., and roughly half of them have to be euthanized because there simply aren’t enough good homes. Countless more suffer on the streets throughout the country.

In addition to combating the homeless-animal overpopulation crisis, sterilizing animals makes them less likely to develop cancer of the reproductive system and — in the case of neutered males — less likely to roam or fight.

Lopez will unveil his ad live at Sublime Restaurant & Bar in Fort Lauderdale this Sunday. He joins a long list of celebrities — including Kate del Castillo, Carla Morrison, Joaquin Phoenix, Alicia Silverstone, Casey Affleck, Eva Mendes, Alfonso Herrera, and Taraji P. Henson — who have teamed up with PETA to promote kindness to animals.

The memorable event featured special guests, performers and other surprises. A highlight of the evening was special musical performances by actress, singer and author Bernadette Peters and Matthew Morrison, formerly of Glee and several on and off-Broadway shows.

He also presented Marie Bernstein and Larry Leeds with trophies as the 2016 winners of the Charles Evans PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tour. A trivia quiz was held over the course of the evening, which attendees could partake in while enjoying the delectable dishes prepared by Daniel’s Chef Daniel Boulud.

Reebok and brand ambassador Gigi Hadid last week hosted the #PerfectNever Revolution, an empowering event that challenged hundreds of women from all walks of life to come together and confront the unattainable notions and standards of perfection.

A series of activities including a workout class, a panel discussion with prolific female trailblazers and an immersive, artistic installation brought to life Reebok’s underpinning brand spirit, “Be More Human,” and showcased the global fitness leader’s unwavering commitment to identifying and meeting the demands of women worldwide.

“A lot of people expect us to be perfect, and it’s often the times when we haven’t been perfect that have made us more human and more relatable,” said Hadid.

“My mom always talked about growing in different areas, and I think that’s really important. I think that’s where sports became a really big part of my life, and I learned many ways that you learn from your mistakes that I use in every aspect of my life now.”
Gigi united with a group of inspiring women who are redefining perceptions in their respective industries and challenging norms. Here, the women formed a dynamic panel where they spoke to their own experiences of the pressures of perfection and gave insight into how they combat these impossible standards. Panelists included:

Lena Dunham said, “The reason that I started doing my job was to connect with other women, with other people, and to let them know that their flaws, their complexities and their darkness were an important part of who they are. So any time I can engage with something that busts open narratives, traditional narratives, about who women are supposed to be, I’m there.”

Ruby Rose said, “The #PerfectNever campaign resonated with me because I think that it embodies female empowerment and it’s about being authentic to yourself, being true to yourself and being the best that you can be. We are all so unique and if you can’t be true to that and be authentic to who you were born to be, then you are not living the life you deserve.”

Zoe Kravitz said, “The #PerfectNever campaign is important to me because I think it’s something we don’t see enough in the world. I think it’s important for women to embrace the fact that we’re not perfect and celebrate that.”

Commenting on the panel discussion, Jessica Mendoza said, “Just listening to the other women, powerful women, talk about their own strengths and weaknesses and how they’ve gotten to where they’re at was one of the most powerful panels I’ve been on.”

Hannah Jeter, Olivia Culpo and Shanina Shaik also joined the inspired audience at the #PerfectNever Revolution, representing SIX:02 who currently carries the Reebok Women’s Collection.
Continuing the #PerfectNever story which debuted worldwide in early 2016, Gigi also participated with guests in an immersive workout experience alongside longtime trainer and Gotham Gym owner, Rob Piela. Showcasing her love for boxing, Hadid sparred with guests during the combat master class, which took the women through moves that strengthen and empower.

The event culminated in powerful and uplifting style as Reebok and Gigi invited guests to take part in an interactive installation. A sea of balloons featuring phrases reflecting negative notions and unrealistic expectations women face in their daily lives transformed into positive and inspiring words that brought the #PerfectNever philosophy to life. Engaging with women around the world in real time, the installation featured social commentary posted via #PerfectNever, reflecting the campaign’s truly universal message.

Commenting on the #PerfectNever Revolution, Inga Stenta, Senior Director at Reebok shared, “The #PerfectNever Revolution is a powerful expression of our Be More Human rallying cry. Reebok’s mission is to empower people to be the best versions of themselves not just physically, but mentally and socially. Each moment in today’s #PerfectNever experience combined these beliefs with Gigi’s personal fight against the pressures of perfection. The #PerfectNever Revolution and Reebok’s partnership with Gigi marks the second phase in the #PerfectNever movement’s chapter. Its debut was led by a compelling campaign video featuring athlete and champion of empowerment, Ronda Rousey.
